Reading Between the Lines.......

So I took a close look at each homestead to see what I could figure out about the family.

Starting with William, the Entry application shows he was living at 605 - 8th St. N.E. in Calgary Alta on Jan 2 1913. He was a 56 year old carpenter born in Plymouth England and was with Matilda who was 54 years old. The remainder of the forms do tell us the building and land he had cleared but more important is that from Aug. 31st 1915. to Oct. 27 1918 he was in Trail B.C.. We knew he had been there from the postcards but the exact dates were not known. postcard-012, postcard-022, postcard-023, scan0041, scan0077, scan0114, scan0123. The Patent Application also shows he had 2 children living with him on Feb. 6th 1919.

Frederick didn't apply for Entry until October 18th 1915 at which time he was 26 years old, single, and a carpenter from Alberta and was born in Plymouth England. On September 9th, 1916 he enlisted into the 506158 Sapper, 25th R.D. Canadian Engineers Training Depot. C.E.F. and was discharged on May 27th, 1919. At the time of discharge he was living at 484 Delorimier Ave., Montreal. P.Q.. After returning to the homestead sometime in June of 1919, he occasionally was away from the homestead and while there he resided with his father William. He applied for his Patent in 1922. He had no livestock or building on his land so he must have been one of the children living with William. Attestation paper front, Attestation paper back.

James applied for his Entry on May 10th, 1913 and was a 21 year old, single farmer from Iola and was born in Hampshire, England. By July 24th 1916 when he applied for his patent, he had cleared his 20 acres, built a log house and owned a horse. He lived there all year round.

John White applied for his Entry on May 27th 1913. He was a 39 year old, single, farmer from Lavesta, which is the next County South of Iola, and was born in the U.S.A.. He cleared his 20 acres and built a log house but spent parts of every year away from the homestead working as a farmhand in Edmonton, Saskatchewan and Southern Alberta. He applied for his Patent on Sept. 2nd, 1918.
